Helmut Marko is making controversy again, this time after Checo Perez has become an object of criticism of the Red Bull advisor. Mainly, with the issue of his renewal, because every time Horner ratifies the Mexican driver, the Austrian sows doubt with the option of Lando Norris. But last Wednesday, Marko made some controversial comments about Perez that he has had to qualify given the commotion generated.

In an interview for Sport & Talk on Servus TV, the Red Bull technical advisor spoke of the mental strength of his driver, although the comment was out of place, because neither is Perez “South American” nor the mentality of a driver varies according to the place where he was born. Champions like Senna, Fittipaldi or Fangio came from South America and have been key to build the history of this sport.

Helmut stated that “Checo is South American and therefore his head is not as focused as Max Verstappen‘s or Sebastian Vettel‘s; but racing is his forte and he had a very good pace”.

Not for the first time, the Austrian linked the driver to the southern part of the continent.

“As a South American, he has a lot of ups and downs,” he commented on Sky Germany.

This time, the motoring world has said enough and the Austrian has had to explain the meaning of his statements.

After two days of criticism, Marko had no choice but to come out and explain.

“I didn’t mean that. I meant to say that a Mexican has a different mentality than a German or a Dutchman, but who knows, maybe it’s under control,” the Red Bull advisor tried to justify.

The person he should really have a conversation with and find out how he felt is with his driver, Checo Perez.
