Megan Rapinoe missed her attempt in a penalty shootout against Sweden over the weekend to doom the USWNT at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Melbourne. Conservatives celebrated the team’s early exit from the tournament, but the manner in which it happened was the cherry on top.

Rapinoe, 38, drew the ire of right-wing fans when she took a knee during the national anthem in 2016. The now-retired soccer star is also considered the leader when it comes to not singing the Star-Spangled Banner at this tournament.

Megan Rapinoe reflects on her legacy: “I’ve tried to make the world a better place”

Conservatives were already rooting for the USWNT to lose the World Cup after winning the past two editions of the tournament.

This marks the worst finish in history for the USWNT and many right-wing accounts are mocking Rapinoe for her role in the team’s early exit.

“The anti-American USA woke women’s soccer team has been eliminated and Megan Rapinoe is the cause of it. I can’t stop laughing,” tweeted Catturd, a conservative account with 1.9 million followers.

Benny Johnson, chief creative officer at Turning Point USA, also mocked Rapinoe’s penalty miss.

“Woke U.S. Women’s Soccer Humiliation,” Johnson tweeted. “After winning back-to-back World Cups the heavily favored Team USA has been eliminated by Sweden in the [Round of 16].

“Team USA’s downfall was delivered by anti-America, anti-woman activist Megan Rapinoe’s embarrassing free [penalty] kick here.”

Rapinoe retired from the USWNT with that missed penalty kick and will go down as one of the saddest endings to a professional career.
