Rescue teams have bravely ventured into “The Abyss” in a frantic effort to find missing TV doctor Michael Mosley.

Authorities, including police and fire brigade units, have intensified their search for the esteemed medic by delving into a labyrinth of subterranean passages. The 67-year-old British doctor went missing during a hike on the Greek island of Symi last Wednesday.

Mosley is believed to have embarked on a solitary trek back from St Nicholas Beach in Symi at around 1:30 pm on Wednesday, aiming to rejoin his wife Dr Clare Bailey and two companions at their accommodation in Pedi. Now in its fourth day, the search operation has seen firefighters meticulously exploring a series of waterlogged tunnels near Agia Marina, reports the Express.

This extensive and seemingly bottomless network of tunnels reportedly stretches across vast distances. A local waiter remarked: “It’s like a deep system of tunnels, but it is full of water and can spread for kilometres.”

“If there is a hole and you fall, you lose your sense of balance and drown there. They don’t call it ‘The Abyss’ for nothing. There’s definitely something odd happening.”

CCTV footage has captured what appears to be Mosley walking with an umbrella close to the marina in the village of Pedi in Symi. Earlier video evidence from a residence on the outskirts of Pedi’s quaint marina showed the TV presenter heading towards a mountain trail around 2pm local time on the day he vanished.

Symi Mayor Eleftherios Papakaloudoukas has expressed doubts about anyone’s chances of survival in the sweltering conditions that soared above 40C on the day of Mosley’s disappearance. The sweltering heat and parched conditions are severely hampering the search operations.

A rescue team member has said that a group of 10 was navigating multiple peaks in an effort to locate the well-known health and diet expert. Firefighter Stergos Giakoumakis said: “It’s not so easy to bring here 100 people, especially this period because it’s the most dangerous period.”

He added: “Everything is dry and it is too dangerous for firemen to search.”

Dr Mosley’s spouse Clare and their four offspring have joined the search near Pedi, as he was last spotted heading towards a mountainous path known as Agia Marina.
