As Jim Harbaugh seeks a likely return to the NFL, the newly crowned CFP champion isn’t closing the door on a potential contract extension with the University of Michigan. But the program’s patience appears to be wearing thin, according to reports.

Despite being offered what would be an NCAA record-setting 10-year $125 million contract, the coach is requesting additional unorthodox language be added in relation to investigations involving the alleged sign-stealing scandal from late 2023. He is also demanding his buyout remain at the current $1.5 million, despite the school’s request to raise it to $4 million.
Harbaugh’s requested contractual language would save him from being fired due to NCAA investigations, but not for performance related reasons.

The 60-year-old coach is currently one of the most sought out hires in the NFL coaching market. Along with former Patriots coach Bill Belichick and Detroit Lions OC Ben Johnson, Harbaugh leads the coaching cycle in likely big-name hires. Having interviewed with the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday, the first HC to bring Michigan a national title since 1997 will likely lead an NFL franchise in the upcoming 2024 season.
If the brother of Ravens coach John Harbaugh doesn’t reach an agreement with the Chargers, it is believed that several other franchises would approach him to lead their team before the NFL coaching cycle ends on February 15.
On an interview with ESPN’s Adam Schefter, John gave his brother the highest praise, saying that Jim is “the beast team builder in football right now”.
