Eder Militao has suffered a cruciate ligament injury in his left knee. His tears led to fears of a serious injury and tests have confirmed it. Real Madrid have lost the leader of their defence for several months, just days after Thibaut Courtois ruptured his cruciate ligament in training.
Real Madrid have made it official in a statement: “Following tests carried out on our player Eder Militao, he has been diagnosed with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. The player will undergo surgery in the coming days”.
Militao went to engage Sancet right at the start of the second half, but in his attempt to stop the Athletic Club player he dug his left leg into the San Mames turf and his knee broke. He immediately lay on the ground clutching the joint and thumping the grass, with obvious signs of pain.
Although the stretcher was brought in to take the Brazilian off, he finally left the pitch on his own feet, supported by two doctors. Despite the momentary optimism at seeing him leave the pitch walking and not on a stretcher, the worst predictions have ended up coming true.
Hole in the squad and no clear replacement
The injury leaves Ancelotti with three healthy centre-backs: Alaba, Rudiger and Nacho. The three will have to rotate and share all the minutes over the next few months in which Militao will not be able to participate. The departure of Rafa Marin and Pablo Ramon from Castilla also leaves no clear path for ‘promotion’ from the reserve team.
We will have to see if, as with the goalkeeping position, Madrid decide to explore the market, although the urgency is obviously not the same as with Courtois.
