A model said to be “inconsolable with remorse” after choking his girlfriend to death during a sex game that went tragically wrong, walked to secluded woodland and hanged himself.

Luke Cannon, 31, described by his mum as a “wonderful man who lit up the room”, had been taking drugs GHB and cocaine with girlfriend Georgia Brooke, 26, when he said she became breathless and stopped breathing.

After phoning a GP friend, he phoned 999 and paramedics attended his house in Thornbury, Bradford, where they found Georgia in cardiac arrest, naked and laid on the floor beside a bed.

Luke went to Bradford Royal Infirmary in a separate ambulance to Georgia but she was declared dead shortly after arrival. After being told she had died, Luke called a friend of Georgia’s and told her she had died.

He left the hospital via a fire exit and was found dead a short time later in secluded woodland off Squire Lane, Bradford. West Yorkshire Police had been hunting him as a murder suspect after medics found ligature-type marks around Georgia’s neck which a pathologist later concluded were caused by manual strangulation and had resulted in her death.

On Wednesday a coroner concluded that Georgia, of Ossett, had been unlawfully killed. Today the coroner, Martin Fleming, concluded that Luke had taken his own life and said it appeared that he had been ‘inconsolable’ with remorse.

The hearing was told that Luke, formerly of Hebden Bridge and Bradford, had taken GHB, Viagra and cocaine on the night of the tragic sex game in February 2022. He had a history of using cocaine and had previously admitted to using anabolic steroids.

In a statement, his mum Jane described Luke as a “wonderful man who lit up the room”. Jane described him as a kind man who had worked as a model, plasterer, labourer, doctor’s receptionist and part-time firefighter, and had loved swimming, hiking, going to the gym and cycling.

She said Luke and Georgia’s relationship had been casual at first but he had told his mum that he thought he had found his soulmate and was looking forward to their future together. The inquest heard claims that Luke had been ‘coercive’ towards Georgia but Jane said she ‘felt strongly’ that the relationship was not coercive.

She said that “from what I saw it was a balanced relationship”. Luke’s brother Joshua described him as a “happy and generous person” and not a controlling person. He said Luke was a unique and special person who cared about Georgia.

In a statement, a friend of Georgia said she had received a text from her a few days before her death in which she said she was ‘having fun’ and that Luke was “genuine and has done more for me than any other boy ever has”.

Detective Sergeant Phil Hardwick, who investigated the death of Georgia and Luke, said CCTV footage at the hospital showed that Luke was “very distressed” and appeared to be crying. Luke had told a nurse that he and Georgia had taken ‘G’ – GHB – and she had passed out.

The officer said there was nothing to suggest the sexual activity was not consensual. The officer agreed with the coroner there was evidence that Luke had used ‘choking’ on other people before he had met Georgia. The officer said there was evidence that Luke had previously choked Georgia.

Mr Fleming said that Luke had no history of self harming and it seemed that he had been ‘inconsolable’ with remorse following Georgia’s death. He concluded that Luke had been ‘so overwhelmed’ and intended to take his own life and recorded a verdict of suicide.
