Wide receiver Deebo Samuel is a key piece in Kyle Shannahan’s game plan. Therefore, every time the player is injured, alarm bells begin to ring within the San Francisco 49ers and even more so on this occasion, when the NFC Championship is at stake.
According to the 49ers injury report, Samuel did not participate in today’s practice due to the shoulder injury he suffered on Saturday in the Divisional Round game against the Green Bay Packers.
Although San Francisco won that game 24-21, the cost was very high, as they lost Samuel on just the ninth play of the game. Although X-rays showed no damage to his shoulder, the receiver did not return to the game at Levi’s Stadium.
After today’s practice, head coach Shannahan did not elaborate on the status of his star receiver. At a press conference, he simply said that his player “is feeling better.”

At the reporters’ insistence, the 49ers HC admitted, “His shoulder hurts. That’s all, yeah, it just hurts,” and that was it. The question remained about his status heading into the National Conference title game this Sunday against the Detroit Lions.
With the South Carolina graduate on the gridiron, the Niners usually score 32.3 points on average, and quarterback Brock Purdy completes 71.1% of his passes. They have also scored 28 touchdowns and only suffered six interceptions.
Conversely, when Deebo isn’t playing, Purdy tends to have some pretty tough games. On such occasions, the team’s scoring average drops to 18.8 points, and Purdy’s completion rate drops to 61.4%. They have only scored four times and were intercepted five.

Aside from Samuel, only defensive end Nick Bosa and offensive tackle Trent Williams missed practice; both received non-injury-related rest.
Defensive end Arik Armstead, linebacker Dre Greenlaw, both starters, and backup defensive backs George Odum and Ambry Thomas had full practices, although all have various injuries.
