Brazil forward Neymar will undergo surgery Thursday in Brazil after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus on his left knee during a World Cup qualifier against Uruguay.

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) said in a statement that the striker will be operated on in a clinic in the city of Belo Horizonte by a team headed by Rodrigo Lasmar, doctor of the national team.

The injury of the Al Hilal player and main star of the Brazilian team occurred last October 17 during a 2026 World Cup qualifying match against Uruguay, which ended with a ‘Celeste’ win by 2-0.

At the end of the first half, Neymar suffered a twist in the knee in an accidental move. The 31-year-old had to be removed from the field and left the stadium in tears with the help of crutches.

The next day, both CBF and Al Hilal informed that the superstar had a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament and the meniscus of the left knee.

Neymar’s injuries background

The complete tear of his ACL and meniscus is one more of the series of injuries that Neymar has suffered since 2020 and that has left him away from the field for more than a year altogether.

The Brazilian forward already suffered multiple muscular issues, fractured both of his ankles, suffered a fractured rib one, and suffered a lower back injury against Colombia in the 2014 World Cup. Since 2020, Neymar has accumulated 424 days out of activity due to injuries.
