Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes recently signed a restructured contract worth $210.6 million, making him the highest-paid player in the NFL.

Despite his impressive track record of two MVP awards and two Super Bowl wins, the decision to restructure his contract was intriguing.

Mahomes stated that his motive wasn’t personal financial gain but rather an act of altruism to ensure other quarterbacks received the compensation they deserved. He aimed to prevent depressing the quarterback market, which could lead to others being underpaid.

“You’ve got to keep the bar going; you got to keep it moving,” Mahomes said.

“I don’t want people to be negotiated against me, and so that’s the reason that you do something like I did this last week. Just trying to keep the market moving in the right direction, training in the right direction, so not only me but other quarterbacks in other positions can get paid the money that they deserve.”

However, NFL fans were skeptical of Mahomes‘ altruistic intentions. Many believed that he pursued the contract primarily for his own financial benefit and took to social media to express their doubts and reactions.

“I like and respect Mahomes. Dude is incredible, but this is so corny to say,” a user noted.

Another added: “You wanted more money n***a shut the hell up.”

In 2020, Mahomes had already set a significant milestone in the NFL quarterback market by signing a 10-year deal worth $450 million, which was the largest contract of its kind at the time.

“Bro felt a “Responsibility” to get PAID,” a third user indicated.
