As the mercury climbs, the desire to take a refreshing plunge in a pool intensifies.

There’s no denying that on warm, sunny days, you’ll find yourself gazing out of the window, yearning for an outdoor swim. And Yorkshire offers plenty of options for those looking to take the plunge.

Yorkshire, also known as ‘God’s Own County’, boasts a range of outdoor pools often referred to as ‘lidos’ allowing you to enjoy the best of both worlds. Most of these pools are heated, so even if it’s not scorching hot outside, you won’t be too cold.

However, there is one unheated pool that truly comes into its own when temperatures soar above 25C. But it’s not just about being in the water; some of these pools are set in beautiful green surroundings.

There are pools to suit all budgets, ranging from free to a bit more expensive, but remember, you get what you pay for. So, why not dive in?

Filey Paddling Pool.

While it may not be the most exciting pool on our list, Filey’s seafront paddling pool offers stunning views across the bay and best of all, it’s free.

The pool is enclosed, ensuring your little ones won’t be able to run off into the road or the sea. It’s a charming little bonus to any day out.

Hathersage Swimming Pool

Located just outside Yorkshire and not far from Sheffield, this historic outdoor pool offers heated water all year round for comfortable swimming at any time.

However, the changing rooms are not heated, as one of our reporters discovered during a November swim. So, perhaps bring a thick towel and an extra-warm dressing gown to the side of the pool for when you get out?

Helmsley Open Air Pool

The North York Moors boasts a 25m-long heated pool that’s not just about the “holiday atmosphere” but also caters to serious swimmers with adults-only, aquathlon, triathlon, and aquarobics sessions. Set for a seasonal opening, the charity-run swimming spot welcomes guests again from May 28, with tickets available on its website now.

Ilkley Lido

Ilkley Lido sports a gleaming refurbishment and is enticing swimmers with its 45m of outdoor pool length. Open since last month, it offers lessons for children, exclusive over-16s sessions, and stunning views.

The brisk waters may be unheated a detail that could offer a “refreshing” dip during warmer weather. Located on Denton Rd in Ilkley, entry fees are set at £5.05 for adults, while it costs £2.60 for kids aged three to 16 and pensioners.

Little ones under three can enjoy the lido at no cost.
