At this time last year, the Seattle Seahawks were a team on the rise. Head coach Pete Carroll had guided a young group into the NFL playoffs when many expected a rebuilding year, and the future looked bright with players such as Devon Witherspoon, Riq Woolen, and Kenneth Walker III gaining more experience.

But Seattle could not build on its 2022 success. The Seahawks missed the playoffs this season, and the organization on Wednesday decided to let Carroll go after 14 seasons together. In an interesting twist, Carroll told reporters that the decision to leave the Seahawks wasn’t his — but he went along with it anyway.

Carroll: I went along with the organization’s decision

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Carroll said he “competed hard” to remain as the head coach, but Seahawks owner Jody Allen wanted to go in a new direction. Seattle will be hiring its first new coach since 2010.

Carroll, who had also been a key voice in the front office throughout his 14-year tenure as the head coach, is expected to take on a new role alongside general manager John Schneider. It remains to be seen whether Carroll will actively contribute to the new head coach search, but — at least publicly — agreed with Allen‘s assessment that it was “a good move” for the franchise to move on without him, especially as Carroll (now 72) advances in age.

Carroll’s achievements in Seattle

Carroll departs the Seahawks as Seattle‘s all-time winningest coach, with a record of 137-89-1 as well as 10 playoff victories. Under Carroll’s guidance, Seattle defined an era of NFL defense with its “Legion of Boom” unit, which led the Seahawks to victory in Super Bowl XLVIII — the franchise’s first-ever championship.

Seattle returned to the Super Bowl the following season, but it did not play in another NFC championship game under Carroll. The Seahawks this season were outscored for the first time since 2010 — Carroll’s first season in charge — and they fell from ninth in scoring offense to 17th. A new coach will be charged with restoring Seattle’s offensive firepower and continuing to mold its young star players such as Witherspoon, acquired with a draft pick from the Russell Wilson trade to the Denver Broncos in 2022.
