Race Across The World viewers were left in tears as contestant Alfie was overcome with emotion when he opened up on losing his mum for the first time.

The 20-year-old is taking part in the BBC hit competition alongside his boyfriend Owen and they have been in a good position in the race so far.

During tonight’s episode tensions were high as one team will be eliminated from the race. Things soon turned emotional once Alfie and Owen arrived in Hoi An, Vietnam as he took the opportunity to open up about his late mum, who passed away when he was just five years old, for the first time on the show.

In moving scenes Alfie and Owen are in a boat and viewers saw him lighting a floating lantern and setting it free. Lanterns have become synonymous in Hoi An Vietnam, locals consider their light to be a symbol of life and they release them onto the river as a way of paying respect to ancestors.

Alfie took the time to reflect, he said: “A lot of lanterns around, which is an item that’s very close to my heart. Just thinking about maybe just taking a minute to myself.”

Owen was there to support him as he turned to Alfie and said: “Yeah, go for it, mate.” Alfie went on to open up as he said: “When my mum passed away, we set one off every year with a message so to be able to kind of reignite that would be incredible.”

He added: “This is the first opportunity I’ve had on the race to think about my mum. I’m just inundated with emotions I’ve genuinely not felt since I was a little kid. I just kind of want that sensation of seeing her again.”

Viewers watching at home were left ‘in tears’ at the emotional moment as they insisted that Alfie will win the show @linzirob Tweeted: “Well that was unexpected…Alfie losing his mum so young -no lad, don’t get a grip it’s good to have a greet #RaceAcrossTheWorld.”
