With the signing of Jon Rahm – current winner of the Augusta Masters and number 3 in the world ranking – by LIV Golf, the super league created by Saudi Arabia has sent a very clear message to the rest of golfers: LIV is not going anywhere and is more open than ever to all the great players.
LIV wants to banish the misconception that they are only recruiting players in their twilight years or too young. In any case, they are only in their third year and the addition of the Spaniard could invite many not to fear a change.
Rahm is not the only one in his prime at the age of 29.
There are players like Brooks Koepka who, once recovered from his injury, is one of the most important golfers today; this year, like ‘Rahmbo’, he won a major (PGA Championship). Cameron Smith, winner in 2022 of the British Open and The Players, is another of the great references of the LIV, as well as Dustin Johnson, who at 39 is in his hand to continue in the elite.
This year the best player in the ‘super league’ has been the American Talor Gooch, with three individual victories. The Chilean Joaquin Niemann is one of the big bets for the future of the LIV along with Matthew Wolff. Patrick Reed, also winner of the Masters, is another of its strongholds, as well as the contrasted Louis Oosthuizen or Charl Schwartzel. In the same age group there are players as emblematic as Sergio Garcia and Bubba Watson.
Of course, the growth of the LIV is and will always be slower than that of the PGA Tour until both circuits reach some kind of agreement.
