A few days before the tenth anniversary of Michael Schumacher‘s accident in the Alpine resort of Meribel, his younger brother and former Formula One driver Ralf Schumacher reflects on the event.
Ralf was at the hospital in Grenoble from the very first moment of the event, supporting Michael‘s family in December 2013.

“That event changed our family,” Ralf says in an interview with German paper Bild.
“I can say that his accident was a very bad and drastic experience for me as well. But not only for me, for example also for Michael‘s children. Mick, as we all know, was there (skiing together with his father) when he was a young teenager. Unfortunately, life is not always fair and here too there was a lot of bad luck,” recalls the younger Schumacher.
Growing up with Michael Schumacher
Ralf remembers his childhood with Michael, when his parents worked at a karting track in Kerpen.
“He is not only my brother, but when I was younger he was also my coach and mentor. He taught me everything about karting. We may be seven years apart, but he was always by my side then. We drove go-karts together, practised overtaking, all those things that are important in motorsport. He gave me all the experience he had had in the previous seven years. I was simply allowed to learn from the best,” he recalls gratefully.
Without too much means, Ralf recalls that their racing career was like a quantum leap.
“We were very lucky. Basically, we grew up in the gravel pit next to the go-kart track in Kerpen. When our parents bought the house next door, we initially shared a room and slept on a mattress on the floor because we didn’t have money for a bed yet. And then Michael became a junior racing driver for Mercedes. It’s still unbelievable today what came out of these circumstances,” he said.
He misses him
Turning to his brother’s current state and how he feels about him, Ralf gets emotional.
“I miss my Michael from back then. Life is sometimes unfair. Michael had been lucky many times in his life, but then the tragic accident happened. Fortunately, modern medicine has made it possible to do some things, but still, nothing is like before,” he says of what they have gone through.
