Canelo Alvarez once again showed superiority against an opponent in the ring and won with a clear unanimous decision over Jermell Charlo to retain his world championships.
Judges Harvey Max DeLuca and David Sutherland gave 118-109 scorecards for Canelo Alvarez, while Steve Weisfield recorded 119-108, allowing the Mexican to retain the WBA, WBC, WBO and IBF Super Middleweight championships.
The win put the Mexican with a record of 60-2-2 in his professional career, and brought forward that his next fight would be on May 5, 2024.
Which opponent will Canelo face in May?
While the fighter did not clarify anything in his first statements, his trainer did give a couple of names.
“I was very pleased with the performance because we showed good preparation. I would have liked him to knock him out, but he (Charlo) is also a great fighter, an undisputed champion and it’s not easy,” said Eddy Reynoso on TV Azteca.
Asked which opponent he would like for Alvarez next year, Reynoso mentioned two possible great opponents: David Benavidez and Dmitry Bivol. Now it will be a matter of making arrangements with the promoters.
“I’d like Benavidez or Bivol to come.” He was then asked if any Mexican could compete.
“None, right now the only one is (Jaime) Munguia, but I see him a long way off,” said Reynoso.
