Luis Rubiales will no longer serve as president of the Spanish Football Federation.
He announced the news in an interview in London with Piers Morgan.
Suspended by FIFA for 90 days from his position, Rubiales has confirmed that he will resign and will not return to his post once the sanction is over.
In a two-hour interview of which a short preview has been published on social media, Rubiales admits to a resignation because he will not return to his post.
“Resignation? Yes, I have to do it because I cannot continue my job. I take this decision after having made sure that my departure will contribute to the stability that will allow us to bring the 2030 World Cup to our country.”
In this regard, Rubiales confirmed that he has already tendered his resignation. “I have transmitted my resignation as president of the RFEF. After the swift suspension carried out by FIFA, plus the rest of the proceedings opened against me, it is clear that I will not be able to return to my position.”
Along with the interview, Rubiales has communicated his decision through his social networks, where he published a letter in which he explained his views on everything that has happened since the Women’s World Cup Final.
Rubiales post on X where he published his letter, alleges to the current charges against him and reads: “I will defend my honorability. I will defend my innocence. I have faith in the future. I have faith in the truth. Thank you all.” Accompanied by a Spanish flag emoji.
In his letter, the 46-year-old also confirmed he is stepping down from his position as UEFA vicepresident.
