Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez lived up to pre-fight predictions and secured a convincing win over Jaime Munguia in Las Vegas on Saturday. Now David Benavidez is in his sights.
Full of confidence and with his morale sky high, the Mexican found his most persevering challenger in Munguia at the T-Mobile Arena, and gave him a defiant gesture that many interpreted as an invitation to fight in the near future.

As many would expect, Benavidez accepted with open arms, while Canelo was not as direct in his post-fight statements – and even received boos from some fans for not giving a definitive answer as he left the door open.
“I don’t know right now. I want to rest, enjoy my family. But you know, if the money is right, I can fight right now, I don’t give a s***,” Canelo said.
“I’ve fought everybody they say I don’t want to face, I’ve fought all of them. I can do whatever I want, I’m Mexican.”
Will Canelo vs Benavidez happen?
Upon hearing Canelo‘s words, Benavidez responded with an attempt to end the debate and raise the possibility of a hypothetical fight, claiming Canelo is demanding a high fee to avoid ducking him.
“He’s running out of excuses, he says all I bring is 25 pounds more and I’m not worth anything, but he’s asking for $200 million and now he wants to fight me the same night,” Benavidez said.
“That’s stupid, just tell people you don’t want to fight me. To me, it looks like he’s scared.”
Beyond the usual exchange of verbal jabs between the two, some experts do see the duel as possible in September, the month in which Canelo will step back into the ring.
“I think that fight could happen. Things are moving. Maybe it doesn’t seem out of place, you can see a path,” Chris Algieri said on ProBox TV’s Deep Waters show.
“I don’t know if it’s because he’s feeling good and confident, but Canelo seems open to the fight against Benavidez. It was a great performance against a very tough young man. Maybe things will change.”
