The world’s top golfer, Scottie Scheffler, has had all charges against him dismissed less than two weeks after his arrest stemming from a traffic dispute during the PGA Championship. The Jefferson County Attorney, Mike O’Connell, filed a motion to dismiss the charges on Wednesday, citing evidence that corroborated Scheffler’s claim that the incident was a “big misunderstanding.”

The charges were related to a May 17 incident outside Valhalla Golf Club, where Scheffler was involved in a confrontation with Detective Bryan Gillis. According to Gillis, he suffered abrasions to his left wrist and knee after being “dragged” by Scheffler’s car. Scheffler was subsequently arrested and faced charges of second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding signals from an officer directing traffic.

Following the dismissal, Scheffler addressed the situation in a statement posted on Instagram. “As I stated previously, this was an unfortunate misunderstanding,” Scheffler wrote. “I hold no ill will toward Officer Gillis. I wish to put this incident behind me and move on, and I hope he will do the same. Police officers have a difficult job and I hold them in high regard. This was a severe miscommunication in a chaotic situation.”

The confusion arose after the death of John Mills, a worker for a vendor at the PGA Championship who was struck by a shuttle bus. This tragedy caused significant disruption in traffic flow, which led to the mix-up that resulted in Scheffler‘s arrest. Despite the arrest, Scheffler was released from jail in time to make his tee time for the second round of the championship.

Scheffler took to Instagram to reflect on the ruling

In his Instagram statement, Scheffler expressed his gratitude for the support he received and emphasized the importance of remembering the real tragedy of May 17. “My thoughts and prayers continue to be with John Mills and his family, and I hope to personally offer my condolences now that the case is over. May John rest in peace,” he stated.

With the legal issues resolved, Scheffler aims to refocus on his golf career and leave the incident behind. He continues to hold law enforcement in high regard and stresses that the event was a result of miscommunication during a stressful and chaotic time.
