Sean “Sugar” O’Malley (17-1-0, 1NC) defeated Aljamain “The Funk Master” Sterling (23-4-0) to become the new undisputed UFC bantamweight champion of the world Saturday night at TD Garden in the main event of UFC 292.
O’Malley, 28, knocked down Sterling with a a brutal punch that led to a stoppage at 00:51 of round two. Sugar started the second frame how he finished the first, with a successful defense on a takedown attempt.

The colorful fighter then did exactly what his corner told him in between rounds, to wait for the counter-strike. They assured the now-champ he was doing everything right.
O’Malley tagged Sterling, who had not lost in the past nine fights, and continued to punish him while on his back, forcing the referee to intervene.
This marks the first title opportunity for O’Malley, who joked during the postfight interview that his reign will last until 2035.

O’Malley also admitted he was extremely nervous walking out into the octagon, more than ever before, which makes his choice of song for the walkout that much more interesting.
He walked out to Lupe Fiasco‘s “Superstar,” which says: “If you are what you say you are, a superstar, then have no fear.”
Once he was inside the octagon, O’Malley looked in complete control from the start, and proved he is not only a superstar, but a champion, and the best in the world.
O’Malley called out Chito Vera to give him a rematch in December. Sugar wants to make up for his only career loss.
