Teacher Rebecca Joynes has been found guilty of a number of sex offences against two teenage boys and is set to be sentenced soon.

The 30-year-old was found guilty of six counts of sexual activity with a child, including two while being in a position of trust. She groomed two teenage boys, and had a child with one after she had been suspended from her school.

Now, she is set to be sentenced after being found guilty at Manchester Crown Court, reports The Mirror.

As a convicted sex offender, she will receive much the same treatment as a male sex offender would in prison. Many establishments separate prisoners with sexual convictions and hold them in Vulnerable Prisoner Units (VPUs).

Due to the young age of Joynes’ victims, she may be at risk of being attacked. According to a study held by the HM Prison and Probation Service, found there was a hierarchy of sexual offences.

It said: “Prisoners who had sexually offended against children were seen to be at the bottom of the sex offence hierarchy and those who had committed sexual offences against adults at the top.”

The report added: “Some people perceived that staff reinforced the hierarchy by treating prisoners differently depending on the age of the victim.”

Despite the fact that many were segregated for their own protection, the report found a “wide spectrum of bullying, harassment and/or violence”.

“Many had faced particular and specific threats from both the other non-sexual prisoners, staff, other VPs and other prisoners with sexual convictions. Even those who did not experience bullying first-hand described how bullying and harassment was the norm for people with sexual convictions.”

A number of male paedophiles have been known to have targets on their heads, including Roy Whiting, who killed and sexually assaulted Sarah Payne. He has been attacked multiple times, including one earlier this year which left him soaked in blood.

He was also attacked in 2018, as other inmates yelled “you f***ing nonce”.

Kandice Barber, 37, another paedophile teacher who had sex with a 15-year-old pupil, was released in March after serving half her sentence. She was jailed for six years and two months in 2021.

She served just three years after being automatically released halfway through her sentence. A Ministry of Justice spokesperson told The Sun : “Sex offenders face some of the strictest licence conditions and can be put back behind bars if they break the rules at any point in their sentence.”

Barber once posed for photos with fellow inmate Jay Delaney, and they were said to be “planning a life together”.

Sexual Offence Prevention Orders are often issued by judges as well as sentences. These often forbid offenders from taking part in certain activities or engaging in certain behaviours.

Offenders also need to comply with the Sex Offenders’ Register, where they are forced to give their name and address to police. This must always be updated if there are any changes, and their failure to do so can result in a prison term of up to five years. All sex offenders are barred from working in schools.

Fatinah Houssain is another convicted sex offender who groomed and had sex with a 14-year-old student. In 2021, she was sentenced to five years and four months in jail.

Honourable Judge Jeremy Gold dubbed the then-25-year-old’s crime as “quite a remarkable campaign of harassment”. Hossain will indefinitely be a Registered Sex Offender and once released from prison, be subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for 10 years. An indefinite Restraining Order also prohibits her from any contact with her victim.

In the same year, a former primary school deputy head teacher, Julie Morris, then 44, was jailed for dozens of child sex offences, including nine counts of rape. Morris carried out the campaign alongside her husband David Morris and was banned for teaching for life, then sentenced to 13 years and four months.

In November last year, another female primary school teacher and her paedophile boyfriend who filmed themselves sexually abusing a child were jailed. Zoe Williams, 30, and Thomas Surtees, 37, both admitted multiple offences including sexually assaulting a child aged under 13 and engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child.

Judge Julie Clemitson said she was “satisfied” both were a “danger” and presented a “significant risk of causing serious harm to children” in the future. Williams was sentenced to 10 years and Surtees to 15 years.

Both were told they would be made subject to a sexual harm prevention order and “notification requirements” for the rest of their lives. They must serve an extended licence period of five years upon their release from prison.
