Shohei Ohtani gifted a Porche to the wife of his Los Angeles Dodgers teammate after that teammate surrendered his number for the MLB ace.
The Japanese player who signed a 700 million dollar contract, which he later deferred some of, splashed some of that cash on the wife of Joe Kelly, a fellow pitcher.

The ex-American League man paid respect to the pair for their role in enticing him to sign at Dodger Stadium and also for allowing him to retain his number 17 jersey, whilst Kelly will now don the number 99.
“It’s yours. From Shohei,” Kelly‘s wife is told in a video posted to Twitter, now known as X, from the official Dodgers‘ account. “He wanted to gift you a Porsche. I swear.”
Ohtani’s a team player
Ohtani is already showing his willingness to be a team player and to integrate into the franchise through not only this gesture, but the decision to only claim 2m dollars per year of his 700m dollar salary.
That will allow the Dodgers to keep their spending power for the rest of their roster open, thus attracting greater talent to the ball club and that might have already happened in the form of Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
A fellow graduate of the Nippon Professional Baseball league in their native Japan, Yamamoto signed with the Dodgers in a 12-year contract worth 27m dollars per year, after interest from the San Francisco Giants and New York Yankees.
Yamamoto was one of the hottest prospects from the other side of the Pacific and had won the equivalent of the CY Young Award (Eiji Sawamura Award) in 2023 whilst he was also voted Pacific League MVP three times.
He is also s a three-time Triple Crown winner, meaning that he maintained the best wins rate, strikeouts and earned run average across the entire league.
Yamamoto is the only player in professional baseball history to hit three-consecutive Triple Crowns and aged just 25 years old, that makes him an exciting talent to join the MLB.
