A teenage girl has been charged with murder after allegedly stabbing her 10-year-old sister multiple times in their Lake Macquarie home.

Police received reports about 3.45pm on Monday of a stabbing at a home on Thurston Street, Boolaroo, 20 kilometres south-west of Newcastle.

When police and paramedics arrived they found the 10-year-old girl with multiple stab wounds. Despite the best efforts of emergency responders, the young girl could not be saved.

“Emergency services did try for some time to try and revive the child, but unfortunately they were unsuccessful and the child was deceased,” NSW Police Deputy Commissioner of Regional NSW Field Operations Paul Pisanos told 2GB.

The 17-year-old, who Nine News reported is the younger girl’s sister, was arrested at the home and taken to Belmont police station as homicide detectives investigated the alleged domestic violence incident.

On Tuesday morning police said the girl had since been charged with domestic violence murder and was refused bail. She will appear before a children’s court on Tuesday.

“It is just beyond words,” said a neighbour, who did not want to be identified because she knew the girl’s family. “We are grieving.”

Police are expected to give a further update later on Tuesday morning.
