The Kansas City Chiefs have had to rely on grinding out victories this season, as their offense hasn’t been as explosive as in previous years. Despite this, the team managed to secure 11 wins, a division championship, and a playoff game victory against the Miami Dolphins on Saturday night.

Jason Avant, who played for the Chiefs in 2014 and 2015, emphasized that Kansas City is still equipped to win tough games, largely due to the presence of quarterback Patrick Mahomes. However, Avant pointed out that Mahomes is currently lacking the same level of offensive firepower, putting more pressure on the team’s defense. According to Avant, “the Chiefs teams are usually loaded with weapons here and there. This Chiefs team has limitations.”

Avant highlighted the team’s defensive strengths, noting that they have a consistent defense capable of applying timely pressure, playing man-to-man coverage, and boasting standout players such as Pro Bowl-caliber corners in McDuffie and Sneed, as well as solid safety and linebacker play. He expressed confidence in the team’s Super Bowl prospects due to their defensive prowess.

However, Avant expressed reservations about the Chiefs’ offensive makeup beyond a select few players. He praised coach Reid for limiting targets and identified Travis Kelce, Isiah Pacheco, and Mahomes as standout performers. On the other hand, Avant criticized players like Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Mecole Hardman, describing them as lacking mental toughness and exhibiting hesitancy in their approach to the game.

What do they need to correct?

Avant specifically pointed to drops from Valdes-Scantling earlier in the season and some questionable plays from Hardman during the recent win over the Dolphins. He suggested that their performance is indicative of their mental toughness or lack thereof.

Looking ahead, Kansas City has a chance to make their sixth consecutive AFC championship game appearance as they prepare to face the Buffalo Bills. The team’s ability to advance further in the playoffs will likely hinge on their ability to overcome offensive limitations and continue relying on their formidable defense.

While the Chiefs have faced challenges due to their less prolific offense this season, their strong defensive capabilities and the leadership of Mahomes still position them as serious contenders in the postseason.
