This offseason has been one of little respite for the Kansas City Chiefs. Two of the team’s top players, Harrison Butker and Rashee Rice, have been embroiled in controversy this spring as the Chiefs gear up to defend their title as Super Bowl champions for the third year in a row. Team leaders Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes will doubtless be upset to see another of their teammates not doing what he’s supposed to be doing.

Defensive end Isaiah Buggs is facing misdemeanor warrants in Tuscaloosa, Alabama amid disturbing allegations relating to animal cruelty. Buggs, who joined the Chiefs last season and won Super Bowl LVIII with Kansas City, is now facing an uncertain future with the franchise as its problems with player behavior continue to grow.

What did Buggs do?

Police in Alabama — where Buggs played for Crimson Tide in college — allege that Buggs left two dogs out on the back porch of property he was renting in Tuscaloosa. Local police and animal control officers arrived at the house on March 28 and found a pitbull, as well as a Rottweiler mix, with no access to food or water, leading to the potential charges of animal cruelty for Buggs.

Police say that the pitbull was surrounded by excrement, while the Rottweiler was found in a metal cage bathed in direct sunlight. One of Buggs’ neighbors had told police that the dogs had been on the back porch for at least 10 days. The pitbull was euthanized last month, while the Rottweiler remains in a local animal shelter. A court ruling will determine whether Buggs, a former sixth-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers, will be allowed to own dogs or other animals in the future.

It all adds up to another messy situation for the Chiefs, whose problems keeping their players in line threaten to overshadow Mahomes‘ efforts to lead Kansas City to a third consecutive Super Bowl title — a first in NFL history. As Buggs is not considered a vital piece of the Chiefs’ defense, the franchise could simply cut him pending his legal issues, but it remains to be seen what action coach Andy Reid and general manager Brett Veach will take — and, more importantly, whether the allegations against Buggs are proven to be true.
