The upcoming showdown between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson is poised to make boxing history by breaking a record that has stood for over six decades. Scheduled for July 20 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, the heavyweight clash between Paul and Tyson promises to be one of the most talked-about events of the year.
In a surprising turn of events, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) has sanctioned the bout as a professional fight, overturning initial speculation that it would be an exhibition match.
While Tyson hasn’t competed professionally since June 2005, when he suffered a defeat to Kevin McBribe, the former world heavyweight champion boasts an impressive record of over 50 professional fights throughout his legendary career.
Set to break a remarkable record
On the other hand, Jake Paul, with 10 professional fights under his belt and a record of 9-1, is gearing up to face the boxing icon. The 27-year-old ‘Problem Child’ will be going up against Tyson, who will be 58 years old at the time of their bout.
This staggering 31-year age gap between the two fighters will set a new record in professional boxing history, surpassing the previous record of a 24-year age gap set in 1963. ESPN reports that the biggest age gap in a professional boxing match was between Archie Moore, 49, and Mike DiBiase, 25.
Tyson’s return to the ring at 58 years old marks a remarkable comeback for the boxing legend, who last competed professionally at the age of 38.
