Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson opened the door for quarterback Colin Kaepernick to return to the field in the XFL.
In response to a comment on his Instagram account, which he later deleted, Johnson revealed that he had a meeting with Kaepernick’s agents a few months ago.
However, the meeting did not yield the expected results. “It was a good meeting, looking to create an opportunity for him, but I don’t think it will happen. We’ll see,” said the actor and businessman.
In late September, Kaepernick sent a letter to the New York Jets seeking an opportunity. In the letter, the University of Nevada graduate expressed interest in a place on the practice squad.
The Achilles tendon injury that sidelined starter Aaron Rodgers for the entire season could prompt moves on the team’s depth chart, potentially opening a spot for the 35-year-old veteran.
However, according to sources close to the team, the board would not be interested in hiring the former San Francisco 49er.
Kaepernick’s opportunity in the XFL
Although the previous meeting between the XFL and Kaepernick did not produce the desired results, analysts believe this would be the best route for the quarterback to return to the NFL.
A strong performance in a professional league, albeit smaller, could attract the attention of top-tier teams. However, if he doesn’t excel in a less competitive circuit, it could diminish the signal caller’s hopes of returning to the pinnacle of professional football.
Kaepernick’s last NFL game was on December 24, 2016, in San Francisco’s 22-21 victory over the Los Angeles Rams. That was the 49ers’ first win of the season, and they finished with a 2-14 record.
The Rock and the XFL
The Rock acquired the XFL in August 2020 in partnership with businesswoman Dany Garcia and investment firm RedBird Capital.
The league features eight teams playing a 48-game schedule in the spring. The 2023 season concluded on May 13, with the Arlington Renegades securing a 35-26 victory over the DC Defenders in the championship game.
