Michelob ULTRA Arena on Sunday played host to Game 1 of the 2023 WNBA Finals, and the Las Vegas Aces had a superstar minority owner in attendance and on their side.

NFL legend Tom Brady took in the action just days after officially joining Mark Davis and the rest of the Aces‘ ownership group — and Brady‘s presence drew the attention of Aces guard Kelsey Plum, who threw a little shade the GOAT’s way for taking his sweet time to attend a game.

Plum prods Brady

Brady, widely regarded as the greatest quarterback in NFL history, has started a new chapter since retirement. He now holds minority ownership stakes in both the Aces and the Las Vegas Raiders — which are majority-owned by Mark Davis, who moved the Raiders from Oakland to Las Vegas in 2020.

Brady had announced in March that he was to join the Aces‘ ownership consortium, but his courtside appearance on Sunday was his first appearance at a game during the 2023 season — which saw the reigning WNBA champion Aces ring up the league’s best record. And when Plum spotted him on Sunday, she made sure to let him know what he’d been missing.

Plum has previously stated that Brady, a seven-time Super Bowl champion, is her favorite athlete of all-time — and she certainly stepped up her game with the legendary quarterback seated courtside.

Aces grab big win in Game 1

After trailing 49-46 at halftime, the Aces came out in the second half and throttled the New York Liberty, rallying to win 99-82 to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five series.

Plum and Las Vegas forward Jackie Young were the game’s leading scorers with 26 points apiece as the Aces outscored the Liberty by 20 points in the second half. WNBA MVP Breanna Stewart got her numbers, finishing with 21 points and nine rebounds, but her efforts were not enough to keep New York from falling into a series hole.

Game 2 of the series is on Wednesday, and the Liberty would love nothing more than to steal home-court advantage away from the Aces. But with the backing of Brady, a repeat in Las Vegas might just be on the cards.
