Tom Brady, considered by many to be the best player in the history of the NFL, isn’t excited about the direction football is heading in.
During a recent episode of his “Lets Go!” podcast with Jim Gray and Larry Fitzgerald, the 46-year-old made it clear he isn’t a fan of how the physicality of the game is being stripped away.
“There’s so many people that want it less and less physical, it’s more like flag football, which is going to be in the Olympics in 2028,” Brady said.
“Maybe football goes to flag football over a period of time.”
Brady not happy with how the game is officiated
Brady, who retired in February after a 23-year career, referred to the constant changes in NFL rules. This has limited hits on quarterbacks and resulted in penalties that a couple of decades wouldn’t have been called.
“Football is a physical sport, there’s a physical element to all of this,” he said.
“You throw a 15-yard flag for something that, you know, 20 years ago maybe wouldn’t have had a flag. That affects the game in a big way.”
Flag football growing
Flag football features five players per team. In order to stop the opponent, one of the flags that each player carries on the side of their hips must be removed without physical contact.
Since 2022, this sport has been the NFL’s best bet when it comes to expandng its fan base around the world.
It even created an alliance with the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) called Vision28, with the aim of making this sport part of the Olympic program, something that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) accepted on Monday.
