Tributes have been paid to a much-loved Huddersfield teacher and school leader who has died aged 54.

Michelle Wood, who served as Marsden Junior School’s vice principal and class teacher for 17 years, has died following a short battle with cancer, her family said. Mrs Wood, a former rugby league player and junior coach with Slaithwaite Saracens in Huddersfield, was described by her school as a dedicated, kind and passionate educator and leader.

Jamie Stuttard, executive principal at Marsden Junior, told parents the devastating news in a letter on Sunday in which he described Mrs Wood as “an integral part of the school’s community, and her dedication, passion and kindness touched the lives of many in the local area and beyond.”

He added: “Mrs Wood faced her illness with strength and resilience, and her positive spirit inspired everyone. She approached her responsibilities with unwavering commitment, always putting the wellbeing and education of students above all else.

“She played a pivotal role in many of Marsden Junior School’s successes, leaving a lasting impact that will be felt for years to come. As we mourn her loss, let us also remember the countless moments of joy, laughter and shared accomplishments that Mrs Wood brought into the lives of the entire school community.

“She will be deeply missed by colleagues, friends, children and the local area. We understand that this news may be difficult for our children to process, and we are here to provide support and guidance during this challenging time.”

The school said that, in time, it would honour Mrs Wood’s memory as a school community, adding: “Our thoughts are with Mrs Wood’s family and loved ones during this time of grief. May they find happiness in the cherished memories and the impact she made on so many lives in Marsden and beyond.”

Mrs Wood stepped down from her job and took ill-health retirement in May. At the time, the school described her dedication to the community of Marsden as “nothing short of legendary” and said her “competitive nature was infectious, not only in sporting events, but in her ability to instil a desire in all children and staff to succeed.”

The school said: “Mrs Wood epitomised the essence of what a leader in school should be.”

Mrs Wood’s daughter, Jessica Clow, posted the news about her mum’s death on social media and said: “It is with great sadness that we are writing to announce the passing of our beloved Wife, Daughter, Mum, Sister, Auntie and Grandma, Michelle.

“Mum passed away yesterday morning following a short battle with cancer. We are so proud of Mum for always giving us all the very best memories! She was so special and made an impact on so many lives. She is and always will be a true Spartan warrior.”

Jessica said her mum had played rugby for Slaithwaite Ladies and had represented Great Britain in 2013 in New Zealand. She had also coached Slaithwaite Saracens junior teams for around 12 years.

Parents posted their own tributes on social media. One woman wrote: “Mrs Wood was an absolutely phenomenal teacher and had such a positive impact on the lives of so many children, my two included.”

On Sunday the school’s PTA (Parent Teacher Association) said: “MJS PTA are totally saddened to hear this news today. Michelle was a true leader. A lady who we all admired and loved and who will be sadly missed by all those who knew her. At peace now Michelle. Thank you for making memories for us all xx.”
