Despite a thrilling 123-116 contest at the Forst Bank Center on November 5, the show was stolen once again by the hotshot rookie Victor Wembanyama but for a very different reason to talent this time.
It happened when Dennis Schroder received a pass from the right flank to slightly center-left of the court, prompting Wembanyama to fling himself at the Raptors point guard in an attempt to block a shot.
Schroder simply held onto the ball and watched the French rookie tumble to the floor in an embarrassing moment for any basketballer to be sat down like that.
He did, however, aim to be a good sport and pick up the 7ft4 San Antonio Spurs player but it turned sour rather quickly.
“I was trying to help you out,” Schroder said to the 19-year-old, who bluntly dismissed the offer by responding, “I don’t need your help.”
Fans love Wembanyama’s sass
It didn’t take long for the internet to catch hold of the encounter with audio being pulled up quickly. Fans loved the moment and the snappy attitude from the highly-rated prospect who has been described as a talent on LeBron James or Michael Jordan‘s scale.
“Wemby is not one to play with”, one observer wrote on X.com.
“This is cold,” another added about his attitude.
“They don’t makem like that anymore,” a third said.
However, not everyone appreciated the sass and called out the youngster on his action and rejection of Schroder‘s sportsmanship.
“Damn not even 2 weeks in the league and he’s already being a diva,” one wrote.
Who do the Spurs play next?
The Spurs will next duel the New York Knicks as the Texan side heads to the eastern seaboard for their eighth game of the 2023/24 season.
The Spurs are currently 3-4 and bottom of the Southwest division, and rank ninth overall in the Western Conference just above the Los Angeles Lakers.
They can pull themselves back up to .500 with a win over the Knicks, with the game starting at 19:30 EST on October 8.
