Following a disappointing exit in the World Cup Round of 16 against Sweden, Vlatko Andonovski has stepped down from his role as the head coach of the U.S. women’s national team, sources from The Athletic confirmed.

Taking the reins from Jill Ellis in 2019, Andonovski inherited a team riding high on back-to-back World Cup victories. Initially, his tenure seemed promising. Implementing innovative strategies while leveraging the experience of veteran players, the team went through a decent a winning streak under his leadership.

However, the first signs of a potential downturn emerged in 2021. A surprise 3-0 loss to Sweden during the Tokyo Olympics signified a turning point. Despite being the tournament favorites, the team settled for a bronze medal in Tokyo. Efforts to integrate younger talent, like Sophia Smith and rejuvenate stars like Mallory Swanson, faced challenges. The team’s unprecedented loss in three consecutive games last fall highlighted apparent struggles.

Heading into the 2023 World Cup, concerns around Andonovski‘s leadership loomed large among avid fans. The team’s performance in the tournament did little to alleviate these worries. The USWNT being eliminated in the round of 16, marking their worst finish in history. Furthermore, the squad managed only four goals, the least by any U.S. team in a Women’s World Cup.

Despite the setbacks, Andonovski is regarded as a commendable figure, known for his dedication to players both on and off the field. His emotional post-match conference underscored his bond with the team. However, the sporting world often prioritizes results, leading to his early departure, four months before his contract’s scheduled end.

Now, the focus shifts to U.S. Soccer’s sporting director, Matt Crocker, who will spearhead both a post-tournament analysis and the search for a new coach. Given the approach taken for the U.S. men’s national team, a detailed and meticulous search process is expected. With the Paris Olympics on the horizon, the pressure to find the right fit is rising.

In the interim, U.S. Soccer’s immediate task is identifying leadership for the team’s September training camp and subsequent matches against South Africa. Whether this appointment will be temporary or long-term remains to be seen.
