Draymond Green has revealed he was convinced to abandon his plans to retire after holding a long conversation with NBA commissioner Adam Silver.
The 33-year-old had been cleared to return to action by the NBA after spending 12 games out for punching Phoenix Suns player Jusuf Nurkic in November.
Green has long courted controversy during his career for violent on-court incidents, and that particular act was his second in the space of a month after he grabbed Minnesota’s Rudy Gobert in a chokehold.
In a new episode of ‘The Draymond Green Show’, Green talks about the moment he decided to quit basketball and retire as he struggled to cope with the trials and tribulations of being in the public eye. That before Silver said his piece, helping talk him out of the decision, as he prepares for a return to action.
“I told him, ‘Adam this is too much for me… this is too much. It’s all becoming too much for me – and I’m going to retire’,” Green said.
“And Adam said, ‘You’re making a very rash decision and I won’t let you do that.’ We had a long, great conversation – very helpful to me.
“Very thankful to play in a league with a commissioner like Adam who’s more about helping you than hurting you; helping you than punishing you. He’s more about the players.”
Draymond Green set for Warriors return
Green is now poised to return for the Golden State Warriors next week after undergoing a month’s worth of counseling to address his behavior.
He has been reinstated by the NBA after officials noticed a positive change in his demeanor, and he is now preparing for his return with the Warriors.
The Warriors could do with some fresh invigoration after a relatively disappointing campaign, as they are currently 11th in the Western Conference and have a 17-19 record.
Green‘s contribution of an average of 9.7 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.8 assists in 15 games this season will be welcomed, providing he is able to control his discipline on the court.
