Where Tino Livramento ranks among Newcastle’s record signings

Newcastle have had an unusual transfer window in the sense that, for a club with seemingly unlimited spending power, they have struggled to secure many of their primary targets.

The deal for Sandro Tonali was done nice and early with AC Milan, but they then struggled to get deals over the line until Harvey Barnes rocked up at St James’ Park from Leicester in what could be one of the shrewdest moves of the summer.

But not content there, Newcastle have kept the transfer floodgates open, confirming the signing of exciting full-back Tino Livramento from Southampton. The 20-year-old made just 30 appearances on the south coast, missing a chunk of time because of a serious knee injury, but is widely regarded as one of the brighrest prospects in England.

Livramento has set Newcastle back a significant chunk of money too, becoming one of the club’s most expensive signings ever.

It is surprising that it has taken this long for a Premier League side to sign Livramento given Southampton are gearing up for a season in the Championship. Even despite the fact that he missed effectively the whole of the 2022/23 season, he has done enough in the past to command a pretty sizeable fee.

90min revealed in early August that the move could end up costing Newcastle £40m in total – £35m in guaranteed fees plus an additional £5m in add-ons. Considering Southampton paid Chelsea just £6.5m for him in 2021, that represents a significant profit for the Saints.

It is not all good news for Southampton though when it comes to the fee, as Chelsea inserted a 40% sell-on clause when they sold Livramento to Southampton – perhaps knowing that his ability, and positional versatility, would come to the fore pretty quickly.

As you may expect, Livramento’s £40m fee is not going to launch him to the top of Newcastle’s record signing list. That being said, it will get him pretty high.

Despite arriving last summer, Alexander Isak is standing firm at the top of the list, while Sandro Tonali is a very comfortable second after his move from AC Milan earlier in the summer.

Livramento slots into fifth place on the list, as he has demanded a bigger fee than the likes of Sven Botman, Chris Wood, Joe Willock and even Michael Owen. Livramento’s arrival means that the top 10 most expensive signings in Newcastle’s history all arrived since 2019, and half of the list have arrived in the past two seasons.

It is not yet clear if Newcastle will spend big again in the 2023 summer window, but you’d be a fool to bet against the big bucks being splashed over the next few years.
