Chad Henne, former NFL quarterback, recently revealed that he turned down an opportunity to join the New York Jets after Aaron Rodgers suffered a season-ending injury. Despite the Jets being a possible Super Bowl contender, Henne decided to pass on the deal.
“I hung them up for the right reasons,” Henne said in an interview with Sports Illustrated. “I didn’t want to go back and put my body into it.”
Henne, who retired earlier this year following the Kansas City Chiefs‘ Super Bowl victory, spent 15 seasons in the league and started in 54 total games. He played for the Miami Dolphins, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Chiefs, winning two Super Bowls with the latter.
While Henne could have been a valuable veteran presence for the Jets’ young quarterback Zach Wilson, he chose to prioritize his health and well-being over the opportunity to compete for a championship.
Wilson, who has completed 54.2% of his passes for 310 yards, two touchdowns, and four interceptions in two games this season, will face the New England Patriots in their upcoming game.
Henne prioritize his health
The decision made by Henne to prioritize his health and well-being is not uncommon among NFL players. With the physical demands of the sport and the risk of injury, many players choose to retire early or decline offers to continue playing.
In fact, Henne’s decision to retire earlier this year was met with praise and admiration from his former teammates and coaches.
“Chad was an incredible player and an even better person,” said Chiefs head coach Andy Reid in a statement following Henne’s retirement. “He was a leader on and off the field and made a significant impact on our team.”
While it may be disappointing for Jets fans to miss out on the opportunity to have Henne as part of their team, his decision serves as a reminder that sometimes the most important thing is to prioritize one’s health and well-being.
