The sport of boxing was on fire in 2023. Big fights consistently materialized, and 2024 certainly appears to be shaping up as a worthy successor.

Coming off of Anthony Joshua vs Francis Ngannou, Saudi Arabia is in the spotlight. Boxing fans have grown used to huge events being held in Riyadh, and that will be the case once again over the next few months. Usyk-Fury and Bivol-Beterbiev will be held there in May and June, respectively.

Oleksandr Usyk confirms he and Fury have “agreed on a fight in Saudi Arabia”

Carl Froch says boxing is being ruined by Saudi Arabia

Given Saudi’s controversial history, not everyone is a fan of the rise in overseas fights. Carl Froch, one of the best super-middleweight fighters in his time, believes it’s ruining the sport.

It’s being ruined by Saudi Arabia at the minute. The money’s killing it. There’s a lot of money floating around and not enough getting put back into grassroots boxing, and not enough going into the aftercare of boxing and retired fighters and injured fighters. There’s a lot of money in it at the top level. So I don’t think it’s good for it.

Froch isn’t alone when it comes to his sentiments. It’s a fine line between making big fights happen and keeping the entirety of the sport running smoothly and with the future in mind.

Not all big boxing fights are being made with Saudi Arabia in mind. Tszyu-Thurman and Canelo-Munguia will be held in Vegas. Haney-Garcia is coming to New York. Lomachenko-Kambosos will be in Australia.
