Steven Rhain Pinker was charged with murder after a woman’s body was discovered inside a Fortitude Valley apartment on Tuesday.

Police believe a woman was allegedly killed by her son on Easter Sunday, at least two days before her body was discovered in an inner-Brisbane apartment.

Steven Rhain Pinker, 42, was arrested about 1pm on Tuesday after police conducting a welfare check found the body of a 66-year-old woman in a unit at the Central Brunswick Apartment Hotel in Fortitude Valley.

According to court documents, police allege Pinker killed his mother “on or about” March 31, Easter Sunday.

The apartment building where the woman was found is on Brunswick Street, one of the busiest streets in Brisbane and accommodates tourists and longer-term guests. It is surrounded by restaurants and bars.

Pinker’s case was briefly mentioned on Wednesday in the Brisbane Magistrates’ Court, where the case was adjourned to the end of the month.

The unemployed Fortitude Valley man was not required to appear in court.

The name of Pinker’s mother, who is from Western Australia, was redacted from court documents due to the charge being related to domestic violence.

Pinker’s solicitor said he was in the court’s hands as to when the matter would next be heard for a committal mention.

“Given the nature of the charges, obviously there’s no application for bail,” the solicitor said.
