Yorkshire might just have a well-kept secret when it comes to beaches. At the northern edge of North Yorkshire, adjacent to the village of Skinningrove, lies the picturesque and serene Cattersty Sands.

A hidden gem, this beach sees less footfall compared to others in Yorkshire yet its lack of visitors makes it more appealing to those who discover it.

Nestled between Skinningrove village and Whitby is Cattersty Sands. Although Skinningrove Beach is closer to the village, a brief enjoyable stroll along the coastline brings you to this resplendent spot.

Known among locals as ‘Saltburn side’ or ‘Sunny side’, Cattersty Sands is celebrated for its stretched sandy beach, magnificent sand dunes and undisturbed coastal views.

For anyone keen on hiking, the noted 109-mile Cleveland Way walkway that spans through the region crosses by this beach.

The secret of Cattersty Sands has indeed reached national levels, gaining positive reviews in The Guardian. A journalist described the tranquil shore as ‘stunning and empty’ during a walkthrough of the Cleveland Way.

On TripAdvisor, the beach receives nothing but praise from visitors who often refer to it as “unspoilt”, “stunning” and repeatedly, a “hidden gem”. One particularly captivated reviewer wrote: “Don’t tell anyone but this has got to be one of the most stunning beaches I’ve ever seen in this country!

“After parking in a very unassuming but free car park we walked along towards the newly built seawall and as we went through a gap, wow what a sight, it was so beautiful. I’d love to visit in the summer to see how busy it gets but today we had it to ourselves – fabulous.”

Another local added: “A lovely sandy smallish beach which on a hot day makes you think you are abroad on a very secluded private beach. Just perfect.”

The only downside that mentioned is the amount of dog faeces seen along the stretch leading up to the beach.

One Yorkshire dad shared in his blog: “I’ll be honest, there are plenty of dog waste bins along here but they don’t appear to be well used! Do not let this put you off, just keep going. You will come to a kind of gateway that was once a bridge that carried the iron ore railway out to the waiting ships. Stepping through that gateway is like stepping into Narnia (but with sand, not snow).

“Cattersty Sands is a long, golden expanse of lovely clean sand. I stress the clean part as I mentioned the dog mess strewn approach earlier. When I say there is nothing here but the sea and the sand I am not kidding.”

“No food outlets, toilets, games, arcades, donkeys or doughnuts. Nada. Zilch. Diddly squat! It’s perfect! “.
