Dak Prescott is probably the happiest man apart from Zack Martin after the guard officially ended his holdout with the Dallas Cowboys on Monday morning.
The All-Pro right guard was voluntarily missing all team activities since he started to renegotiate his current contract, thus missing crucial weeks of preparation leading into the 2023 regular season.
Martin’s restructured deal
The Dallas Cowboys couldn’t afford to keep Zack Martin away from training camp and agreed to fold to the player’s requests by giving him a significant pay increase for the next two seasons.
With the new deal in place, Martin will receive over $18.5 million dollars in each year. Before the deal, he was slated to make $13 million in 2023 and $14 million in 2024.
This represents over $8 million dollars in pay increase.
Holdout finally comes to an end
Because of the time he missed with the team during the holdout Martin has been fined for more than $1 million dollars.
CowboysOwner and General Manager, Jerry Jones, recently expressed that the team needed the money that Martin was expecting to renew the contracts of other key players: “It’s not about precedent, it’s about facts. We need the money to pay (Micah) Parsons. We need the money to pay the players that we got to pay in the future. That’s a fact.”
The eight-time Pro Bowler and 2010’s NFL All-Decade Team member confirmed all was good in his book and he was ready to rejoin the team by posting a message on his X account that simply said “Back to work”.
The Cowboys are scheduled to play their second preseason game this Saturday, August 19, against the Seahawks at Lumen Field in Seattle at 10 pm ET.
