Gibson is the child of Ulla Nurse and kickboxer and artist Peter Gibson from St. Lucia. He was raised in Finland’s Espoo. At the age of 15, Gibson moved to Saskatchewan and enrolled at Notre Dame College in Wilcox, a prominent hockey school.

Gibson’s ice hockey career got its start at Notre Dame College.With the Notre Dame Hounds (Midget AAA), where he started his career, he won the Telus Cup national championship in 2009.Gibson was chosen by the Chicoutimi Saguenéens of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in the first round of the 2009 CHL Import Draft.He was thought to be the best goalie in the QMJHL before to the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
In the 2011 NHL Draft, Gibson was selected as the first goaltender from the Canadian Hockey League.On September 17, 2015, the Maple Leafs traded Gibson and four other prospects to the New York Islanders in exchange for Michael Grabner. He played for the Islanders against the Washington Capitals in his NHL debut. On August 15, 2016, the Islanders re-signed Gibson to a $660,000, one-year, two-way contract. Gibson, then 17 years old, won the bronze medal in the 2010 IIHF World U18 Championships in Belarus. At the 2012 World Junior Championships in Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta, he was picked to represent Finland.
