Former Australian selector, Laurie Sawle, dies at the age of 96

Former Chairman of Australian selectors and opening batter of western Australia, Laurie Sawle, passed away at 96. According to the sources, Laurie passed away unexpectedly overnight.

The news was revealed through a statement made by the Western Australia Cricket Association.

Laurie Sawle’s early life and career:

Laurie was born in East Fremantle on 19 August 1925. He made his cricket debut at 29 by playing for Western Australia and played a total of 35 matches.

After retiring from playing in 1961, he started his career as a selector in 1962.

Laurie was a selector for the Australian cricket team for 13 years from 1982-1995, 11 of which he served as the Chairman. Hence he played a massive role in shaping Australia’s cricket team of the 1990s and 2000s.

He has been credited with the appointment of Bob Simpson as the national coach in 1986; he also had a powerful role in selecting ‘Australia’s Golden Generation,’ which included cricket legends like Mark Taylor, Ian Healy, Glenn McGrath, Shane Warne, and Steve and Mark Waugh.

He also played a huge role in developing Australia’s under-19 programs and constructing the Australian Cricket Academy in the late 1980s and 1990s, where many legendary players were coached. He served in the 7th Australian Infantry Battalion during WW2, which is why he was nicknamed ‘colonel.’

The entire Australian Cricket world felt his loss. Western Australia cricket CEO Christina Mathews penned a heartfelt tribute for the entire WA cricket Association.
