 Marvin Williams is a retired professional basketball player from the United States. Marvin Williams played for the Atlanta Hawks, Utah Jazz, Charlotte Hornets, and Milwaukee Bucks during his NBA career.

Early Life

Marvin Williams was born in Bremerton, Washington, the United States, on June 19, 1986.

His birth name is Marvin Gaye Williams Jr. and holds US nationality. He has a birth sign of Gemini and is currently 37 years old as of 2023. He belongs to the African-American ethnicity and he practices Christianity religion.

The names of his parents are Marvin Williams Sr. and Andrea Gittens. In addition, he was raised along with his two siblings; Demetrius and J’Tonn. From his childhood, he had a strong interest in basketball.

Marvin Williams – Education

In terms of his academics, he attended Bremerton High School and took an interest in basketball early on in his life. He was named the area player of the year as a junior. As a senior, he was named a McDonald’s All-American as well as a Parade All-American. The Associated Press awarded him Washington Player of the Year.

He joined the University of North Carolina in 2004 and helped the squad capture the NCAA championship in 2004-05. His studies, however, were hampered by his time in the field. He finally finished his degree in African-American studies in July 2014.

Professional Career

Marvin Williams was picked by the Atlanta Hawks as the second overall pick in the 2005 NBA draft, going on to earn NBA All-Rookie Second Team honours after averaging 8.5 points and 4.8 rebounds in 79 games during the 2005–06 season.

On August 7, 2009, he signed with the Hawks to a five-year, $37.5 million contract after four seasons and the term of his rookie contract. Later, on July 11, 2012, he was dealt to the Utah Jazz in exchange for Devin Harris after four more seasons with the team.

On July 21, 2014, he signed a two-year, $14 million contract with the Charlotte Hornets after a brief stint with the Utah Jazz. He averaged 7.4 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.3 assists for the Charlotte Hornets in 2014-15. After a few more seasons with the team, he was re-signed by the Hornets on July 10, 2016, to a four-year, $54,512,500 contract. He was with the team until 2020.

Moreover, he joined the Milwaukee Bucks on February 10, 2020.  He announced his retirement from professional basketball on September 8, 2020, following the Bucks’ second-round playoff departure after an upset loss to the Miami Heat.

Marvin Williams – Awards

During his playing career, he earned several achievements and awards. NBA All-Rookie Second Team (2006), NCAA Champion (2005), USBWA National Freshman of the Year (2005, ACC Rookie of the Year (2005), ACC All-Freshman Team (2005), First-team Parade All-American (2004), and McDonald’s All-American (2004) are some of his achievement which he earned during his playing career.
