Melba Moore was born on 29th October 1945 in New York City, the United States to band leader Teddy Hill and singer Bonnie Davis. Her parents got divorced and her mother later married Clement Leroy Moorman and which, they moved to Newark, New Jersey.

Melba Moore began her career in recording in 1967 and in 1975, her critically acclaimed album R&B was released under Buddah Records.
