The Society is just one of the many shows that received a renewal — only for the decision to be walked back.
The teen mystery drama originally debuted on Netflix in May 2019 to critical acclaim. Due to delays because of COVID-19, however, the streaming service rescinded their decision to produce a second season of the hit series.
“We’ve made the difficult decision not to move forward with second seasons of The Society and I Am Not Okay With This,” Netflix said in a statement in August 2020. “We’re disappointed to have to make these decisions due to circumstances created by COVID.”
Earlier that year, star Kathryn Newton teased what fans could expect from season 2. “To me, it feels like a lot [of it is] about where the story is going to start. I can’t say anything obviously, but people aren’t ready. I’m not even ready!” she exclusively told Us Weekly in January 2020. “I really love [my character] Allie and I’m kind of influenced already by what I know so I can’t say, but she’s been, like, the king of this society and so heavy is the crown that bears the throne.”
Elsewhere in the TV universe, A League of Their Own quickly became a fan-favorite series after premiering on Prime Video in August 2022. The show was renewed in March 2023 for a four-episode final season but Prime Video rescinded the decision due to delays caused by the concurrent WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
“To blame this cancellation on the strike is bulls—t and cowardly. But this post isn’t about all that. About all the ways this show has been put through the ringer. Not today,” star Abbi Jacobson wrote via Instagram in August 2023.

Peacock renewed the show for a second season, but star Pete Davidson chose to cancel the project instead.
“I’ve always seen Bupkis as a window into my life, since it is so personal and about my struggles and family,” Davidson said in a March 2024 statement about the semi-autobiographical comedy. “After nearly a decade of my personal life being in the media I wanted a chance to tell my story my way. Of all the work I’ve ever done, Bupkis is by far what I’m most proud of. I am so grateful to Lorne Michaels and Broadway Video, Peacock, Universal Television and the amazing cast and writers for helping me create something honest, funny and heartfelt. I do also feel that this part of my life is finished. I’m very excited for this next chapter and for you guys to see the work. Thank you to all who support me for I am forever grateful.”
The AMC series got a two-season order when it was originally picked up in October 2019. After filming episodes for both seasons, the network announced in January 2023 that it would not air the new content. Season 2 of 61st Street was subsequently picked up by The CW, with a 2024 airdate.
Netflix picked up Inside Job for a second season in June 2022 before walking back the decision less than a year later.
The Prime Video series originally received a shortened four-episode season 2 order in April 2023 to wrap up ongoing story lines. Amid the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in August 2023, however, the streamer chose to cancel the series instead.
OWN renewed the series for a second season in July 2018 but walked back the decision when executive producer Salim Akil was accused of abuse by a woman who claimed they had an alleged 10-year affair. She filed a lawsuit for copyright infringement alleging that Akil used her screenplay as inspiration for the show. In response, Akil issued a statement through his attorneys denying all the allegations.
After being renewed for a second season in January 2012, Luck was ultimately canceled because PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and other animal activist groups raised concerns about the on-set safety of the animals. (Three horses had to be euthanized during the first season of the HBO show.)
In May 2022, Max renewed Minx for a second season but changed their mind by the end of the year. The series was picked up by Starz, with their second season premiering in July 2023.
Prime Video pulled their season 2 renewal in August 2023 amid the joint WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. (The Peripheral originally got renewed for more episodes earlier that year.)
In March 2018, the Roseanne revival got picked up for season 11. However, star Roseanne Barr’s offscreen controversy in May 2018 caused ABC to walk back the renewal. The show was reformed into The Conners, which starred every cast member except Barr.
