On Wednesday, the New England Patriots signed Ezekiel Elliott to a one-year, $2 million contract that could go up to $6 million with major incentives.
The Patriots had worked out several veteran running backs throughout the summer before finally putting an end to Elliott’s free agency. Elliott definitely still has star power, but the former Dallas Cowboys back has struggled with efficiency over the past three seasons (4.01 yards per carry).
Patriots head coach Bill Belichick loves having more than one main running back, so it’s not a surprise he signed the veteran. Belichick was asked about the signing on Thursday.
We had a good visit with him, and I look forward to working with him. I’ve never coached Zeke before. Glad we have him. We’ll work him in there when he’s ready and we’ll see how that goes.
The head coach gave a very ambiguous answer, which we’ve come to expect from the tight-lipped Belichick. Given Belichick’s propensity for forming committees at the running back position, Zeke should expect plenty of work this season.
A new 1-2 punch in New England
He will share the workload with incumbent starting running back Rhamondre Stevenson. Stevenson handled 279 touches in his second season and admitted he wore down a little bit towards the end of the year.
Stevenson was also asked about Elliott signing and was excited to play with who he called “my guy“. He doesn’t seem worried about the competition.
I wouldn’t really compare us together, but I feel like our game’s going to complement each other very well. Whatever the team needs me to do. Just whatever the coach wants.
