Jaime Munguia’s (43-0, 34 KOs) convincing victory over John Ryder (TKO in the ninth round with knockdowns in the second and fourth) is not guaranteed to change the short-term plans of Canelo Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs) and David Benavidez (28-0, 24 KOs) but, as Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. says, Munguia has given a “stamp of authority” and enters the line-up of big super middleweight fights.
Both Canelo and the ‘Mexican Monster’ plan to return to the ring in May and are considering several options, although nothing is official.

Benavidez’s team do not believe Alvarez wants to take the risk that would come with facing the ‘Red Flag’ and, although they will always be open to this fight, the name of Cuban David Morrell (10-0, 9 KOs) is the one that now occupies a privileged position.
The WBC number one contender’s father has commented that he would like to see his son take on unbeaten Frenchman Christian Mbilli (26-0, 22 KOs).
What has Benavidez said about the future?
Benavidez says they negotiated for two weeks with Munguia last year, but he scrapped the showdown to go against Ryder.
“That’s an easy KO. That’s why they avoid me,” said the ‘Mexican Monster’ on social media about Munguia’s win.
The Benavidez vs. Morrell fight, both linked to PBC, is quite feasible right now and offers a great line-up for Amazon Prime, the platform PBC now works with.
On the horizon for Canelo, who is also now with PBC, is Jermall Charlo (33-0, 22 KOs), who returned in November after a long layoff with a win over Jose Benavidez.
No opponent has yet been announced for the 168-pound champion, and Jaime Munguia has already mentioned that “it would be an honor” to share the ring with the Jalisco native. When the time comes, who should Canelo fight: Benavidez or Munguia?
