The NFL preseason may only be the appetizer to the 17-week entree that is football’s regular season, but that doesn’t mean there is any shortage of storylines or drama before rosters are trimmed down to 53 members.
Some players fight for their NFL lives during preseason, not knowing how many more chances they’ll get to make it big in the league. This makes strong performances in preseason a must for players like Justyn Ross, the Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver who had himself a Sunday to rememeber against the New Orleans Saints.
Justyn’s journey back to the NFL
Ross‘s third-quarter touchdown grab from Shane Buechele is the latest milestone for an undrafted player who is trying to live up to the massive potential he showed in college football.
As a freshman at Clemson, Ross hauled in nine touchdown passes from Trevor Lawrence and recorded a 1,000-yard season as the Tigers won the national championship. Ross helped Clemson return to the national title game the following season, but he missed the entire 2020 campaign after undergoing neck surgery.
Ross returned in 2021 and led the Tigers with 524 receiving yards. He declared for the 2022 NFL Draft after the season but was not selected. The Chiefs signed Ross to a contract before placing him on injured reserve — he had offseason foot surgery that cost him the entire 2022 season.
Can Ross make the cut?
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is good enough to make a weapon out of any wide receiver or tight end. Mahomes already has Travis Kelce, Skyy Moore, Kadarius Toney, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling to throw to — but Ross could also factor into the equation as a depth wide receiver with an NFL-ready physique.
Kansas City saw Ross at the peak of his powers in college and is hopeful that Mahomes can help the talented wideout — who now appears healthy for the first time in at least two years — reach his ceiling with the defending Super Bowl champions.
