After the controversy generated by the last minute victory of the Dallas Cowboys over the Detroit Lions, reports began to emerge trying to explain what happened in the two-point conversion with less than 30 seconds to play that would have given the victory to the Lions, as well as the second place in the NFC standings, but that was nullified by an alleged ineligible man infraction, since the Detroit offensive lineman, Taylor Decker was not reported as an eligible player and caught the ball.

The play aroused the fury of Lions coach Dan Campbell, who claims that the player did everything he was told to do and the play was valid, while the referee team headed by Brad Allen, maintains that the player who was reported as eligible was his teammate Dan Skipper, a reserve offensive tackle, who effectively performed blocking duties on that play.

Several post-game analyses confirmed that the linemen reported properly with the ‘zebras’, but these, were not focused at the time of reporting to the defensive backs and therefore the ESPN insider confirmed this Sunday that the entire staff that works with Allen will not participate in the playoffs this season, due to this error and other serious blunders they have committed throughout the season.

Allen‘s referee crew is expected to be demoted, which will impact whether those referees are selected for the postseason,” Schefter wrote on his X account.

The Lions’ last series came on a flawed play

However, other analysis of the latter pointed out that prior to this controversial Lions‘ offensive series, the Cowboys were also wronged by the referees in their previous series, when they were winning the game 17-13 after intercepting Jared Goff at the Lions‘ 29-yard line and with 2:05 to play, Tony Pollard made a seven-yard carry that the referees penalized with a 15-yard penalty, because closed wing Peyton Hendershot allegedly tripped an opponent.

The Cowboys resumed their offensive series with a first-and-25 at the Lions‘ 44-yard line.

But the video showed that it was Lions defensive wing Aidan Hutchinson who should have been penalized for attempting to trip Pollard.

The play was not commented on by the NFL or the Cowboys, who could only attempt a field goal that made the game 13-20 and gave the ball back to Detroit with less than two minutes left, when, instead, they would have had a first and 10 in Detroit‘s red zone, within the 2-minute timeout and no timeouts, i.e., they could have run out the clock, without risking the ball.

Brad Allen’s staff blunders

Sadly for Allen‘s squad, this isn’t the first controversial situation they’ve been involved in this season:

They failed to flag a blatant interference call that cost the Chiefs a loss in their game against the Packers, a week later they missed another similar tag in Saints vs Falcons.
