It was only a few months ago that Deion Sanders was being billed as the savior of the Colorado Buffaloes, and by some of college football as a whole. But his shining star began to wane shortly thereafter.

Colorado began the year by beating TCU, the national championship runner-up from the previous year. They won two more games right after, with Sanders being talked about as Coach of the Year and his son, Shedeur, as a potential Heisman dark horse. But Colorado lost eight of their final nine games and criticism started pouring in.

Harsh criticism for Deion Sanders

Following the team’s loss to Stanford, hot take machine and Blaze TV talking head Jason Whitlock went so far as to call him a “false god“.

Because we have our racial idolatry lenses on, we don’t care about Travis Hunter. All we care about is Deion “Prime Time” because we’re groupies for Deion. And we don’t care who gets exploited in the name of Deion. Deion is your God, and you’re mad at me because he’s not my god. And you’re mad at me because I’m telling you that you’re worshipping a false god.

Despite Colorado finishing the season 4-8, Sanders was named Sports Illustrated’s Sportsperson of the Year for his role in revitalizing Colorado’s football program. Part of that revitalization was bringing in a ton of new players, and letting go of incumbents.

Some of the players who were cut from the program by Sanders have come out and spoken harshly about the way in which Sanders did so.

Xavier Smith: “We all have expectations of a coach and I just feel like those expectations weren’t met. All I wanted was a coach to be honest with me and give me an opportunity.”

Luke Eckardt: “All my resentment is just for the leadership and the coaches and all that. I don’t have any anger toward the team. I didn’t think they were going to just make us do the whole charade… and then kick us off.”

Eoghan Kerry: “I thought he was going to come in, mentor me, and kind of take me under his wing, because he wanted to see people like me who grew up with their mom and of African-American descent excel. To be ignored and, eventually, dismissed hurt. I can’t speak to why he did it. I just have to respect that he did.”

While these negative testimonials from players came out, Whitlock also attacked Sanders’ character by calling him a bad father.

We watched the quarterback of that team run around and be a little jerk on the field, flaunt his wealth, and act like a spoiled, pampered, and entitled little rich Johnny Manziel… And at no point during this entire season did the head coach put any blame on his quarterback. He’s untouchable, he’s aloof, he’s uncoachable, he’s petulant, he’s entitled, and he’s spoiled because that’s what his daddy has allowed.

Deion Sanders goes through a breakup

In the midst of all of this criticism, Sanders was also revealed to be going through a breakup. Tracey Edmonds, who had been together with Deion since 2012 and got engaged in 2019, announced the split on December 3.

Edmonds mentioned in her announcement post that the two mutually decided to part ways but remain friends. Sanders commented with words of appreciation and praise.
