Floyd Mayweather is in the discussion as one of boxing’s greatest-ever fighters — and though he has not taken part in a professional bout since 2017, he remains among the sport’s biggest draws.
It wasn’t long ago that Mayweather teased fans with a return to the ring, less than a year after his previous exhibition bout in Miami against John Gotti III. More details on Mayweather‘s return to boxing — albeit not in a professional capacity — are starting to emerge, and Money‘s potential opponent is someone he faced in a contentious welterweight showdown more than a decade ago.
Mayweather to renew rivalry with Victor Ortiz
According to ESPN‘s Salvador Rodriguez, Mayweather is set to fight Victor Ortiz in Mexico on Aug. 24, in the eighth exhibition bout Pretty Boy Floyd has agreed to since his last professional fight in 2017. This will not be the first time Mayweather has faced off against Ortiz, and their last meeting ended under a shroud of controversy in 2011.
Back then, Mayweather was challenging Ortiz for the latter’s WBC welterweight belt. Mayweather was in control for the first three rounds, and Ortiz’s bid to get back into the match ended when he headbutted Mayweather in the corner of the ring at MGM Grand Garden Arena. After the incident and a brief delay, Mayweather caught Ortiz with a vicious left hook and sent him to the mat with a right, winning the match via knockout.
Now nearly 13 years removed from that controversial fight, it will be interesting to see how the two boxers greet one another should this bout come to pass. Fans will eagerly await more details as one of the legends of the sport closes in what should be another million-dollar payday.
