Iguodala: If Dillon Brooks wasn’t crazy, he wouldn’t be in the NBA

Houston Rockets guard Dillon Brooks is entering his seventh NBA season, having just joined the Texas franchise.

In recent years he has become the bad boy of the best league in the world. Perhaps it is an extreme way to secure his place in such a demanding environment, which is what four-time NBA champion and 2015 Finals MVP Andre Iguodala believes.

“There’s certain guys in the NBA that wouldn’t be in the NBA if they didn’t have that crazy mentality or how they view themselves,” Iguodala told The Old Man & Three Podcast.

“There’s a selfishness within how they view themselves.

“If Dillon Brooks wasn’t crazy, he wouldn’t be in the NBA.”

Brooks tends to play hard on defense and it is true that he sometimes overdoes it and starts altercations with opponents, such as LeBron James, Nikola Jokic or Donovan Mitchell.

“Survival of the fittest,” host JJ Redick noted.

“I’ve got to do certain things to get to the NBA, and I’ve got to do certain things for me to stick to the NBA.

“The challenge then as an individual is how I can do those things in a team setting, to help my team win a basketball game or help my team win a championship.”

The Grizzlies were fed up with Brooks

Yet, when you overstep some boundaries, as Brooks did last year, it may lead to issues in the team.

The Grizzlies got fed up with his controversies and didn’t make the slightest effort to keep him. In the summer, he signed a four-season deal with the Rockets for 86 million dollars.

The forward was a key member of Canada’s national team at the 2023 FIBA World Cup. He helped Canada to secure a third-place finish, averaging of 15.1 points, 2.9 points and 2.6 assists.

Especially important was his defense, particularly on Luka Doncic against Slovenia, as well as his scoring contribution, such as the 39 points he scored against the United States in the battle for the bronze medal.
